- Do a performance cut first
- Then do a narrative cut and drop them in place
- Any effects work that needs doing
- Finally colour it if needed
Two ways of syncing footage to sound -
Picture sync - You use the number on the screen to link them. Drag the video onto the timeline and check to see if result is ok and in sync. Rename it the name of the shot. (most accurate way of syncing).
Sound sync - Fin the moment when the snare hits. Drag the video down and double check it is synced. Rename track something relevant.
Organise everything in advance as you go and keep it need as it saves loads of time in the long run.
Three rules for editing a music video :
1) Listen to the music and illustrate what you hear (have to have singers face in close up for the first line). Make sure main instruments of part of song are shown or reflected.
2) Group your shots together. Do a close up mid and wide in order of each thing. (close up, mid and wide or guitarist).
3) Follow the movement. Helps smooth out the shots.
How to make the process easier :
Don't ruff cut anything (make it perfect first time).
Do ten seconds at a time (really focus on the music and make it good).
Don't show anyone else your work or editing. Or ask to look at other peoples work.
