Lighting workshop

Today we had a lesson on lighting in the studio in which we were taught about the different lights and techniques we can use in order to light our music videos. This is what I learnt.

Lighting within the room is called house lights or workers (these are the lights that are already supplied within the room just to provide light).

Red head light - This is a really bright film light. Light has protective mesh so that it can protect the people around it if the bulb bursts as the glass is dangerous. Eyes down before you turn lights on so that it does not damage you're sight as they are bright. Say sparking to warn people before turning lights on. When the light is too bright you can adjust exposure on camera. To break up harsh light you can put trace in front of the light which makes it a little softer.

Single point lighting (one light aiming at something). You can use material over the light in order to get a dim effect (not so harsh).

Three point lighting three lights pointing at one thing. Key light is really bright on the person. This creates some shadow on the side of face so needs to be lighted from several angles. Fill light fills in where the shadows are on a face or object (another red head). For the backlight use a blonde which is very bright. You can change the brightness on the blonde, however not on red head lights.

Beauty lighting - turn off front two lights only use blonde. Move blonde behind the person or object. Bounce front light off polystyrene. Cup the side of the lense using hand to get rid of dirty light. Turn exposure all the way up and turn light down till you can see colour of skin. Cup the lense and looks amazing and less blurry. Instead of hand could use a matte box however hand does the same job.

Another form of beauty lighting - use a lighting gel. Put red head behind the gel. You get the same amount of light at all heights. You can use anything to reflect stuff do not need specific materials. Makes it soft and more intimate lighting.

Florescent lights - can’t dim. Colourful. Put one light behind and one in front.

Kino flo   foto-flo - just side view

point at person.

Photon beard  highlight - gives a bright light, very white. Can make maximum brightness and adjust shutter making it super sharp. Good for more edgy videos like rock and metal.
